Late 17th century, deverbal from verbinden, apparently after Dutch verband, from Middle Dutch verbant (ca. 1300), as several of the very earliest attestations are found in translations from Dutch (see citations page). Compare also Middle Low German vorbant (15th c.). By surface analysis, ver- + Band. Partially displaced older Verbund.
