danger · jeopardy (danger of loss, harm, or failure)
çekim: çoğul dangers
köken: Inherited from Old French dangier, alteration of Old French dongier (due to association with Latin damnum (“damage”)), from Vulgar Latin *domniārium (“authority, power”), from Latin dominus (“lord, master”).
aile: danger public, dangereux, en danger, hors de danger, non-assistance à personne en danger
köken: Inherited from Old East Slavic вьрвь (vĭrvĭ) + -ка (-ka), from Proto-Slavic *vьrvь (deverbal of *verti), from Proto-Indo-European *wer- (“to tie, string; rope”) which is ultimately cognate with *wer- (“to turn, bend”) whence the two meanings of the verb. Compare Belarusian вяроўка (vjarówka), Ukrainian верве́чка (vervéčka), Old Church Slavonic връвь (vrŭvĭ). Non-Slavic cognates include Lithuanian…
köken: Borrowed from French file (“line, row”), from Late Latin filare, from Latin filum (“thread”). Related to fileren (“to fillet”) and file (“computer file”).
line, queue (straight sequence of people or items) · range (line or series of mountains, buildings, etc.) · file (column of people; small detachment of soldiers)
çekim: çoğul jonot · tamlayan jonon
köken: SSA considers this word a sound-symbolic variant of juoni. Perhaps more precisely equivalent to j(u)on- + -o, with sporadic shortening of the root vowel (*joon- > *jon-). The forms juono and joni are also found, albeit only sporadically, in dialects. Related to Veps jono, which is found outside of literary Veps in the adverb jonol (“in a line (of e.g. people)”).
köken: Probably derived from čáry (“magic”), čarovat (“to conjure”), meaning a magical line, e.g. the delineation of a magic circle. Possibly connected also with Proto-Indo-European *(s)ker- (“to cut”). First attested in the 14th century.
köken: From avidus (“greedy”) + -eō (stative suffix), hence originally meaning “to be greedy”, as also evidenced by the form sōdēs (“if you please”) < *sī audēs (literally “if you want very much”). For the supine ausum compare also ārdeō : ārsum and gaudeō : gavīsum, in which the i was retained.
