köken: From the same alk- stem as alkuszik (“to bargain”) + -t (instantaneous suffix). The original stem is probably related to Hungarian alkalom (“opportunity”) and alku (“deal”), and it may also be related to Hungarian olt (“to vaccinate”), which may derive from Proto-Uralic *alɜ- (“to add/fasten to something, fit”).
From Proto-Finnic *kirjoittadak. Equivalent to kirja (“book, document”) + -oittaa. Original sense “to decorate with (carved, embroidered, etc.) patterns”; the sense “to write” developed after the introduction of literacy, and is attested since the time of Mikael Agricola (output c. 1543–1552).
