First attested in the Seokbo sangjeol (釋譜詳節 / 석보상절), 1447, as Middle Korean 아ᄅᆞᆷ〮답다〮 (Yale: àlóm-tàptá), perhaps from 아ᄅᆞᆷ〮 (Yale: àlóm, “privateness; non-publicness”) + 답다〮 (Yale: tàptá, “to be as”, adjective-deriving suffix).
