Probably a shift from kärki (etymology 2). Alternatively, and less likely, related to Livonian kerk (“toe or heel of the bit on an axe”) and Võro kärk (“toe or heel of the bit on an axe”) (Mulgi) (for which one may reconstruct Proto-Finnic *kärkkä).
