From Proto-Turkic *käräk (“necessity”), from earlier *kärgäk. Some senses might be from *хэрэх (*xerex) + -г (-g), with unattested *хэрэх (*xerex) being also the root of хэрүүл (xerüül, “quarrel”) and хэрэлдэх (xereldex, “to quarrel”).
