By surface analysis, stō (“stand firm”) + -bilis. Poultney compares the term to Umbrian 𐌔𐌕𐌀𐌚𐌋𐌉 (stafli) and reconstructs Proto-Italic *staðlis, though De Vaan leaves the etymology of the Umbrian term as uncertain.
