From Proto-Finnic *poimidak. Akin to Estonian põimima, Karelian poimie, Livonian pȯimõ, Ludian poimida, Livvi poimie, Veps poimda and Votic põimia. Probably also related to Proto-Samic *poajmōtēk (whence Northern Sami boaibmut).
