The original stem is probably related to Hungarian alkot (“to create”) and alku (“deal”), and it may also be related to Hungarian olt (“to vaccinate”), which may derive from Proto-Uralic *alɜ- (“to add/fasten to something, fit”).

First attested in 1770 in the sense “state of affairs”, then in 1787 with the sense “situation”; of the current senses, “opportunity, chance” is attested since 1817, while “occasion, event, function” only became established in the early 20th century. The intermediate adjective tilainen is not directly attested, only -tilainen in e.g. archaic vähätilainen…
