From Proto-Finnic *pisüdäk (compare Estonian püsima, Veps püžuda), from Proto-Finno-Permic *pise-w- (compare Erzya пезнамс (peznams, “to pierce; to stick”), Moksha пезомс (pezoms), Eastern Mari пижа́ш (pižáš)), with the second-syllable -y- causing labialization of the initial -i- to -y-.
