Cognates include Ancient Greek ἀντί (antí, “opposite, facing”), Sanskrit अन्ति (ánti), Old Armenian ընդ (ənd), Tocharian B ānte, and English and. The change from PIE ablative to Latin accusative is like the confrontational accusative used with Ancient Greek παρά (pará).
