First attested in the Neung'eomgyeong eonhae (楞嚴經諺解 / 능엄경언해), 1461, as Middle Korean 싀다〮 (Yale: sùy-tá). Cognate with 쉬다 (swida, “to go bad, to turn sour”). Possibly related to Japanese 酢 (su, “vinegar”), 酸い (sui, “sour”).
