From Middle Dutch netel (“malicious, angry”), from Old Dutch *nitul, from Proto-West Germanic *hnitul, from Proto-Germanic *hnitulaz + -ig. Often superficially interpreted as deriving from netel (“nettle”), which may however be completely unrelated etymologically.
