Originally Middle Korean 기ᇧ다〮 (kìsktá, “to rejoice”) + -브- (-pù-, adjective-deriving suffix), hence literally "rejoiceful; rejoice-worthy", but the original verb is obsolete and the word is now perceived as monomorphemic. 기껍다 (gikkeopda) is from the same etymon.
