Tanım
•to slash, strike, lash, slap (to deliver a fast and powerful swinging blow, usually with something longish and/or flexible such as a hand, sword, whip or rod) · to snap at, lash out at, retort (to say or speak abruptly or sharply, usually as a response to something that another person said or did)
köken: Inherited from Vulgar Latin *falciāre (compare French faucher), from Latin falx (“sickle, scythe”), from Proto-Indo-European *dhalk-, *dhalg- (“a cutting tool”).
sipa- + -altaa; from the same root as sipaista (the weak grade -v- everywhere in sivaltaa is regular; compare työnnältää < työntää). The semantic link between a word like sivu (“side”) and sivaltaa (“to slash, lash”) could be explained via e.g. the sense “to graze, touch while passing by” (found in sivuta). Compare also Estonian sibama (“to dart, zoom; to scurry”).
