Inherited from Malay marah, possibly from one of which: * Sanskrit मार (māra, “slaughter, destruction, calamity, danger”) or its cognate in Persian [Term?]. Doublet of mara. * Proto-Malayic *(ma-)irah (“red”), from Proto-Malayo-Polynesian *(ma-)iʀaq (“red”). Doublet of merah. Largely displaced native bengis for the adjective, and amuk for the verb and the noun.
