köken: Learnedly, from Hellenistic Koine Greek ἀναγνώστης (anagnṓstēs, “reader, usually a slave trained to read”) (1st century BC), from ἀνάγνωσ(ις) (anágnōs(is), “recognition; reading, reading aloud”) + -της (-tēs). The ecclesiastic term, since the mediaeval times.
From уҡыу (uqıw, “read; study”) + -сы (-sı, affix forming an agent noun). Compare with exactly analogous terms in other languages: Tatar укучы (uquçı), Kazakh оқушы (oquşy), Kyrgyz окуучу (okuucu), Uzbek o'quchi (“reader; student”), Turkish okuyucu (“reader; reading”), Turkmen okyjy, etc.
