Babiniotis sees it as an imperative from, stemming from άιντε (áinte) < *άιτε (*áite) < *άετε (*áete) (with deletion of -γ-) from Ancient Greek ἄγετε (ágete), imperative plural of the verb ἄγω (ágō, “I lead”).
