köken: From Old Galician-Portuguese dom, don, from Late Latin domnus, a syncopated form of Latin dominus (“lord, master”). The Latin form survived in ecclesiastical usage, evolving in Old Portuguese (and Western Romance) via cluster simplification from -mn- to -m-/-n-, with dom standardizing in Portuguese and don in Spanish.
köken: Learned influence on άντρας (ántras), with ⟨νδ⟩ as in the ἄνδρα (ándra), accusative singular of ἀνήρ (anḗr) pronounced in Modern Greek as [nð]. Compare to the pronunciation of the inherited άντρας (ántras).
köken: A compound of fi (a variant of fiú) + er(j) (an otherwise unattested term). The second element is from Proto-Finno-Ugric *irkä (“man, son, boy”).

Etimoloji
From Middle Chinese 旦那 (MC tanH na), 檀那 (MC dan na), both used as transliterations of Sanskrit दान (dā́na, “generosity, giving, donating”). Ultimately cognate with English donate and donor, from Proto-Indo-European *déh₃nom. Attested in Japanese sinophone sources since at least the 1000s and in vernacular Japanese sources since at least 1287.
