Inherited from Ottoman Turkish بنم (benim), from Old Anatolian Turkish بَنُم (benüm), from Proto-Turkic *bẹniŋ. By surface analysis, ben + -in. It was 𐰢𐰤𐰭 (mn²ŋ /⁠mäniŋ⁠/, “my”) in Bilge Khagan and Kul Tigin inscriptions, 𐰋𐰤𐰭 (b²n²ŋ /⁠bäniŋ⁠/, “my”) in Tonyukuk inscriptions. Cognate with Azerbaijani mənim, Uzbek mening, Kazakh менің (menıñ), etc.
