Inherited from Proto-Sabaki *i̧(ji̧)we, from Proto-Bantu *ìbʊ̀è. The correspondences in various Swahili dialects are often irregular. In Unguja, for example, a -b- would have been expected instead of -w-. In Sabaki, cognate with Ngazidja Comorian ɓwe and Giryama iwe. Other Bantu cognates include Rwanda-Rundi ibuye and Zulu ī́tshe.
