Uncertain. Either borrowed from Ancient Greek χᾰ́λῐξ (khắlĭx, “pebble”) or from a substrate origin where it was borrowed into both languages independently. See Sanskrit कर्कर (karkara, “limestone, bone”), perhaps related.
