Etimoloji

/apuɡu/ → /afuɡu/ → /auɡu/ → /aoɡu/ Inherited from Old Japanese. The shift from apu to ao is irregular; compare the development of 煽る (apuru → aoru, “to be blown by the wind; to fan, flap”, intransitive). Compare also 扇(おうぎ) (ōgi, “fan”), derived from the 連(れん)用(よう)形(けい) (ren'yōkei, “stem or continuative form”) of this verb, but which shows the expected shift from apu to ō.
