Uncertain. Perhaps from a Vulgar Latin *dadu, itself either from Latin datum (“thrown, given”), or from Arabic أَعْدَاد (ʔaʕdād, “numbers”). Compare Spanish and Portuguese dado, Catalan dau, French dé (whence English die).
