According to SAOB, probably related to Danish mulm (“darkness”), Proto-Germanic *melhmô and Norwegian Nynorsk mol (“small clouds”) (used in parts of Trøndelag on the Swedish border, although Ivar Aasen doubt clarity of its etymology). Also compare Danish mul (“rain cloud”), Gothic 𐌼𐌹𐌻𐌷𐌼𐌰 (milhma).

From Middle High German wolken, from Old High German wolkan, from Proto-West Germanic *wolkn. Akin to Dutch wolk, English welkin, Proto-Slavic *volga, Albanian ulmej (“to wet, dampen”).
