köken: From کابلی (“Kabuli”), because when they first appeared it was wrongly believed that they were from Kabul. Various different words are used to identify them in different regions: In Khorasan, they are called قرشمال (qerešmâl). In Kerman and Balochistan, as well as Tajikistan, they are called لولی (luli). They are called سوزمانی (suzmâni) in most southern provinces such as Luristan and Kermanshah.
Gypsy · Romani (written or spoken in the language of the Roma people) · bad, worthless
çekim: karşılaştırma cigányabb · üstünlük legcigányabb
köken: From a Slavic language; compare Slovene cigan (“Gypsy”), Serbo-Croatian Cȉgani pl (“Gypsies”). Ultimately from Byzantine Greek ἀθίγγανος (athínganos, “untouchable”). Compare German Zigeuner, and Romanian țigan, which are cognates.
köken: A phono-semantic matching of various European exonyms for Roma people like Yiddish ציגײַנער (tsigayner) and French gitan, with reinforcement from the root צ־ע־ן (forming words related to wandering). By surface analysis, צֹעַן + ־י, as in, someone from the Egyptian city of Tanis, known as צֹעַן (Ṣoʿan) in Hebrew.
