eaves (underside of a roof that extends beyond the external walls of a building)
çekim: çoğul ereszek
köken: First attested in the year 1541, in its most common current sense, 1566. From the same unattested stem of unknown origin as ereget, with the noun-forming suffix -esz, compare rekesz, válasz. Originally meant “release, expansion” (beyond the plane of the roof), compare also the verb ereszt (“to release, let out”).
köken: De Vaan and Weiss argue that it is most likely a back-formation from suggrunda, noting that the form grunda is attested much later than suggrunda. Ultimately, the term may be connected to Proto-Italic *ɣrondā, from Proto-Indo-European *gʰrondʰ-h₂ (collective), from *gʰrendʰ- (“beam, plank”).
