From Middle Dutch cute (“spawn; fleshy body part, e.g. buttock, calf, back of the upper arm”). Further origin unknown. Possibly related with kont (“buttocks”) or with Sanskrit गुद (guda, “entrails”); according to Pokorny, all are derived Proto-Indo-European *gēu- (“to arch bend”), see also German Kugel. Cognate with Middle Low German kūte.
