From Proto-Tai *krwɯːᴬ (“ear”). In Southwestern Tai, cognate with Northern Thai ᩉᩪ, Lao ຫູ (hū), Lü ᦠᦴ (ḣuu), Shan ႁူ (hǔu), Tai Dam ꪬꪴ, Tai Nüa ᥞᥧᥴ (hú), Aiton ꩭူ (hū), Ahom 𑜍𑜥 (rū). In Northern Tai, cognate with Zhuang rwz. Compare Proto-Kra *k.raᴬ and Sui kkal.
