From Proto-Italic *auskoltā, from aus-, the original stem of auris (“ear”), + Proto-Indo-European *ḱlew- (“to hear”). Other theories take the second component to be Proto-Indo-European *ḱel- (“to incline”) (which itself has been connected with *ḱlew-).
