köken: ala- + kulo + -inen. The middle component is of unknown origin. It is possibly from kulo (“dry, dead grass”) in reference to such grass being flattened down, thus "beat down".
From 見じ (miji, “not wanting to see”, formed from 見 (mi), the 未然形 (mizenkei, “irrealis or incomplete form”) of verb 見る (miru, “to see, to look at”) + じ (ji, suffix forming the negative volitional form of verbs)) + 目 (-me, “in that direction, trending that way”, suffix producing na-adjectives). First attested in the early 1800s. The 送り仮名 (okurigana) め (me) is usually included to clarify the reading.
