köken: Many dialectal variants (hailakka, haijakka, haitakka). hailakka may be the original as it is also found in Karelian, which also has Karelian hailata (“to rush, run around”). If so, it may be from hailakka (“pale, faded, wishy-washy”), as fast things have an indistinct colour. The consonant variations would be sound-symbolic.
From Middle High German snellecheit, an extended form of Middle and Old High German snelheit. Equivalent to schnell + -igkeit. The simpler form Schnellheit is now substandard, but may still be heard (chiefly as an ad-hoc formation); compare Dutch snelheid.
