köken: From Middle High German stapfen, from Old High German staphōn, from Proto-West Germanic *stappōn. Related with *stappjan, whence English step. Compare also Dutch stappen. The word had died out in the written language around 1600, but survived in dialects. It was reintroduced by Wieland in his Oberon (1780-96).
