köken: Borrowed from German Ranzen (“satchel”), assimilated to the suffix -ец (-ec). First attested in 1764.
A wanderword widespread in Eastern Europe. The source language is unclear, the word may have come to Hungarian from Slavic. Ultimately, from the mixing of Byzantine Greek τάγιστρον (tágistron, “nosebag”) and Latin canistrum (“wicker basket”). The earlier form tanisztra had the -t- drop to eliminate the consonant cluster, the n and r were swapped, and the n was palatalized.
