However, later linguists such as Mayrhofer and Persson reject this etymology, preferring to link the word with either वल् (val, “to turn round”) or to Dravidian; compare Tamil வளை (vaḷai, “to bend”), Tamil வளையல் (vaḷaiyal, “bangles”).
