Tanım
•west, westward, westerly, western · Western, Occidental; belonging to the West; pertaining to the Occident; related to the Western world or to Western Christianity
köken: From Proto-Finnic *länci (“west ~ southwest”). The meaning “southwest” was also found in some Finnish dialects (mainly in and around Kainuu), but only rarely and is now obsolete.
köken: From the past participle of the verb apune (“to fade, set”), from Latin apponere. Was the traditional word for "west", but today vest is used as the standard term. Compare also the descendants of Latin ponens in the Western Romance languages, which developed the meaning of "west".
köken: * From the second part of the compound word napnyugat ("sunset"). * From the same, now archaic Hungarian verb nyug (“to keep quiet”), the same word from which nyugszik and nyugodt derive. This in turn derives from Proto-Finno-Ugric *ńuŋV (“to rest”).
Learned borrowing from Koine Greek δῠτικός (dŭtikós). Morphologically δύω (dýo) + -τικός (-tikós). In the proper senses, semantic loan from French occidental and English western.
