•tropics (region of the Earth lying between the Tropic of Cancer and the Tropic of Capricorn) · tropic (either of the two parallels of latitude 23°27′ north and south of the equator)
the tropics (the region of the Earth centred on the equator and lying between the Tropic of Cancer and the Tropic of Capricorn and characterized by a hot climate)
çekim: çoğul daerah-daerah khatulistiwa
köken: Compound of daerah (“area”) + khatulistiwa (“equator”).
Borrowed from Latin tropus (“figure of speech, trope”), from Ancient Greek τρόπος (trópos, “turn; figure of speech; musical mode”). The “tropics” sense (etymology 1 sense 1) is possibly a semantic loan from German Tropen (“tropics”). The phonetic form was probably influenced by trópus (“trope”), which was borrowed independently from the same Latin term. First attested in 1833.
