Borrowed from Hindustani (Hindi धतूरा (dhatūrā) / Urdu دَھتُورَہ (dhatūra)), itself borrowed from Sanskrit धत्तूर (dhattūra, “white thorn apple”); possibly through the related Arabic دَاتُورَة (dātūra), as first attested in 1599. Etymology 1, noun sense 2 is most likely by association with the plant's effects when consumed.
