köken: From Old Swedish vinder, from Old Norse vindr, from Proto-Germanic *windaz, ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *h₂wéh₁n̥ts (“blowing”), present participle of *h₂weh₁- (“to blow”). Cognate to English wind (“coil around”).
Uncertain. De Vaan says it is a "novel creation" from pandō, pandere (“to spread out”) + -us (adjective-forming suffix). The verb pandō, pandāre (“to bend”) arose from pandus.
