Ultimately related to Proto-New Indo-Aryan *अड्डइ (aḍḍaï, “to obstruct, stop”), from Dravidian, whence Tamil அடை (aṭai). Doublet of आड़ (āṛ) and related to अड़ना (aṛnā).
