Inherited from Proto-Slavic *bъlvanъ, *balъvanъ (“idol”). Cognate with Polish bałwan (“snowman”), Old Church Slavonic балванъ (balvanŭ, “statue”) and Serbo-Croatian ба̀лван (“beam, log”). Related to Latvian bulvāns (“decoy”). Possibly borrowed from a Turkic language, compare Proto-Turkic *balbal (“gravestone”).
