Etimoloji

Alteration of dialectal lișcă, from Bulgarian лиска (liska) or Ukrainian лусуха (lusuxa). Alternatively from dialectal leșiță, leșaică, if a derivative of leș, an old word for Pole (compare Russian лях (ljax), Turkish Leh). Cf. the name for another duck species, rață leșească (“Muscovy duck”), literally ‘Polish duck’.
