Etimoloji

yli- (“upper”) + oppilas (“pupil, student”). Coined by Finnish journalist and lecturer Rietrik Polén in 1852. Probably formed after yliopisto (“university”), since originally ylioppilas referred to a university student (but now to someone with qualifications to become one).
