Via Byzantine Greek Ἀτσίγγανος (Atsínganos) and Ἀθίγγανος (Athínganos) from Ancient Greek ἀθίγγανος (athínganos, “who doesn't want to be touched; untouchable”), ultimately a compound of privative ἀ- (a-) + θιγγάνω (thingánō, “to touch”).
