The alternative form qayaq ~ qaj̃aq ~ qanaq, which is attested in Old Turkic and in some of the Siberian Turkic languages, appears to have derived from the same verb stem with the different affix -aq. köken: Borrowed from Old Church Slavonic съметана (sŭmetana), from Proto-Slavic *sъmetana; possibly an early borrowing to explain for the vowel sound change before nasals. The "n" can be explained by the influence of *sъmęsti. Compare Bulgarian сметана (smetana), Russian сметана (smetana).
Borrowed from Middle Low German smand. There are two theories as to the origin of the Middle Low German word: * Duden and some other authorities think it derives from Proto-West Germanic *smanþī (“smooth, soft”) and is thus cognate to English smooth. * Jacob Grimm and Václav Machek think it derives from Slavic (whence also Schmetten and English smetana).
