Etimoloji
Compound of しじゅう (shijū) + から (kara). The shijū portion is apparently an onomatopoeia in imitation of the bird's call, while the spelling 四十 (shijū, “forty”) is phonetic ateji (当(あ)て字(じ)). The kara portion is an element appearing in the names of multiple related small birds, such as the 小雀 (kogara, “willow tit”), 五十雀 (gojūkara, “Eurasian nuthatch”), 山雀 (yamagara, “varied tit”), 日雀 (higara, “coal…
