köken: Said to be unknown, but since it is a bitter plant the first part of it is easily identifiable as the Semitic word for “bitter”, Arabic مُرّ (murr) etc., unless it is the same word as treated under مَرْو (marw, “fragrant herbs”) ex Aramaic מַרְוָא / ܡܲܪܘܵܐ (marwā, “Origanum syriacum syn. Origanum maru”), whence Latin marum.
