köken: Etymology tree French tambour Proto-Indo-European *-nós Proto-Indo-European *-iHnos Proto-Italic *-īnos Latin -īnus French -in French tambourinbor. Polish tamburyn Borrowed from French tambourin. Doublet of tamburyno.
Borrowed from Classical Persian دف (daf), from Middle Persian 𐭣𐭯 (dp /dap/), ultimately from Sumerian 𒁾 (dub, “tablet”). The term was nativized (as opposed to the expected दफ़ (daf)), perhaps due to the influence of डमरू (ḍamrū).
