there's no accounting for taste, to each his own, different strokes for different folks, one man's meat is another man's poison
köken: ízlés (“taste, preference”) + -ek (plural suffix) + és (“and”) + pofon (“slap in the face”) + -ok (plural suffix). Literally: “tastes and slaps in the face”. Ellipsis of ízlések és pofonok különbözőek/különböznek (literally “tastes and slaps in the face are different [they can vary per each person]”).
Tastes differ, so arguing about them is pointless. (Literally, “On taste and smell there is no [reason] to argue”.)
köken: Coined by Avraham Shlonsky, from Russian на вку́с и на цвет това́рищей нет (na vkús i na cvet továriščej net, “there's no accounting for taste”, literally “On taste and on color there are no friends”).
מקובל לחשוב כי ”על טעם וריח אין להתווכח“. כך חושבים בדרך־כלל על שאלות של טעם במזון, לבוש וכדומה.
there's no accounting for taste (lit. 'one shouldn't discuss tastes.')
köken: Uncertain; likely of non-classical origin. An alternative, more recent form is de gustibus et coloribus non est disputandum (“there’s no arguing about tastes and colors”).
Et propterea de gustibus non est disputandum, eo quòd tot sint sententiae quot capita, ut est in proverbio.
[…] id enim fieri debet ob variam sensuum dispositionem, et sub hoc respectu verissimum est: de gustibus non est disputandum.
[…] morales controversiae gustu dirimi non possunt, nec per adagium: „de gustibus non est disputandum”, quod in moralibus absurdum est.
