köken: From Dutch jacht (“yacht”), a reduction of jachtschip (literally “chase ship”). The spelling Yacht became standard in German under English influence, though it has now become less common again. For more, see English yacht (also borrowed from Dutch). Doublet of Jagd.
köken: From Middle Dutch jacht, jaecht, jaget, from Old Dutch *jagot, from Proto-West Germanic *jagōþu (“hunt, hunting”). Equivalent to jagen (“to hunt”) + -t (“verbal noun”). Cognate with German Jagd. The form jaecht is due to contraction and jacht to subsequent pre-cluster shortening. (Compare maagd, in which an analogous development was probably hindered by the potential homophone macht.)
